Frame relay provides a streamlined technique for packet switching, designed to maximise throughput and minimise costs by simplifying network processing. Frame delay is particularly suited to applications in which endpoints are intelligent devices (such as workstations and gateways) and transmission lines are high quality. Frame relay uses only the first two layers of the OSI model and increases throughput by using almost no frame processing. All acknowledgements and error recoveries are performed end to end by the user terminals; likewise, flow control is also done at the endpoints. The 1988 CCITT 1.22 recommendations introduced the frame relay protocol and ANSI released all subsequent recommendations.
